KENNET AND AVON CANAL
Devizes Angling Association control approx 15 miles of prime
angling on the Kennet and Avon canal.
From Ladies Bridge, Wilcot near Pewsey westwards through Woodborough,
Honeystreet, Stanton St Bernard, All Cannings, Horton, Devizes, Seend
and ending at Semington road bridge near Melksham.
The fishing is excellent throughout the whole section producing good
weights all year round.
Most baits will work well on this canal. Best baits for general fishing
during summer are Maggots, Caster, Worm and Sweetcorn. Groundbait,
loose feeding and hemp also work well.
Bread punch can be very productive in winter.
Boat traffic can be heavy during high summer and bank holidays, early
morning fishing would be more productive during these times.
To the East of Devizes the canal holds a good head of Skimmers,
Bream, Tench, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Gudgeon Pike and few Carp.
Best methods are pole or waggler fishing with light tackle. Width
approx 11 - 13 metres.
Devizes itself holds a large stock of many different species of fish
including a very large stock of good sized Tench and Carp. Double figure
Carp are frequently caught on these stretches, the best areas being on the
West side of the town just above and below the main Caen Hill flight of
locks (Angling is not allowed on the flight itself).
The canal here can be very wide in places 30- 40+ metres, best
methods include pole, waggler and feeder (method feeder and surface controllers
can also work well here). This is a popular area for Carp anglers.
During the winter this area is a big favorite with Pike anglers.
The canal holds a good stock of Pike and produces many specimen fish, best
methods are dead baits and lures. The Pike season runs from 1st October to
31st March in each Year.
Heading West from Devizes takes you the through the village of Seend,
the fishing is similar to the town stretches with excellent fishing right
through to Semington. This section also has a large head of Tench and
double figure Carp.
Best methods are pole, waggler and feeder, width approx. 14-
16 metres.
